The Calvary of Magyarpolány

A magyarpolányi kálváriaThis late baroque calvary was built in 1780 and was renovated in 1855. This is the place where the internationally famous Polány Calvary takes place. There are 153 stairs leading up to the calvary, alongside which there are painted wooden statues of an average man’s size in five stations with tent roofs. On the way, a stone statue of the Virgin Dolorosa was put up in 1901, as well as here you can find the cross, which was made from the offerings of 107 citizens in Polány before they started off to America and therefore the cross is often referred to as the American cross. Struggling our way up on Calvary hill we can see the chapel of the Virgin Dolorosa, which was built in neo-gothic style in 1910 by a stonemason, called Weber, from Zirc. The landscape you can see from the hill is tremendous. You can see the village, the surrounding area, as well as the beautiful landscape in Bakony.

St. László Church- Magyarpolány

Szent László római katolikus templomThe parish church, now serving as a public monument, was built by the unified Cistercian Abby of Zirc and Heinrichhau for the homage of King St. László. The church was built in the so-called French zopf style (the style of the age Louis XVI). Interestingly enough, the altar paintings are the works by a famous painter named Maulbert.
